My Experience, Work, and Research with
H5P
What is H5P?
H5P is an open-source tool for creating interactive content.

What is an H5P Ambassador?
I belong to the H5P Ambassador Community, an international group of folks passionate about ed tech who love to learn and share our knowledge with others.
We are called upon to share the benefits of using H5P with others in the edtech community.
Why Do I Use H5P?
I was introduced to it in my Master's program and immediately fell in love with the possibilities it held as an instructional designer and teacher.
-
It's easy to use, free, and flexible.
-
You can host it on the web, or integrate it into your LMS.
-
For those designing instruction in OER, it is built into Pressbooks, too.
-
It can be used to organize content and make the content interactive.
-
It can be used as a formative assessment tool.
-
Students can use it to create presentations and interactive learning objects.
-
It supports Mayer's Multimedia Principles.

Below, you will find examples of my H5P creations for assignments as a graduate student and for my work with faculty teams creating OER at Loyola Marymount University. For my research work with H5P, take a look at the Research page of my portfolio.
H5P Assignments
Master's Degree Program: I created these four H5P interactives for a Master's level, Multimedia Authoring course.

Assignment: The assignment asked students to create a complete design and development of instruction on topic of interest in Moodle LMS.

Music Faculty: As a new Instructional Designer working for a community college, I looked for something I could create for this assignment that would also serve my faculty. An instructor needed to move one week of instruction in an Intro to Music course into an online Canvas course.

Solution: I decided to build the entire instruction in H5P, because it could support instruction with audio, visual, and text content, interactivity, and practice with feedback. It could also be hosted in both Moodle and Canvas LMS.

Four Parts of Instruction:
Use the arrow on each interactive to make them full screen.

Objectives, Overview, and Instructions
2. Introduction to the Orchestra
Purpose: I created a video that introduced the objectives of the instruction, gave an overview of what learner should expect, and gave clear instructions for navigating and completing the instruction.

Using H5P Interactive Video allowed me to

-
Divide the information using bookmarks which helped students navigate the content.
-
Allow for learners to review the information at the end (*Generative Activities).

Winner of the 2024 H5P Academy Award for Best Use of Multimedia!
Purpose: Since the learners were adult college students, I decided to use self-guided learning. I wanted to allow learners' curiosity to guide their learning and exploration of the content.

Using H5P Virtual Tour allowed me to

-
Incorporate layers of scenes with various images
-
Immerse learners in a specific environment (*Immersion)
-
Use sound in both content and feedback (*Emotional Design)
-
Use hotspots for curiosity-guided learning
-
Allow for learners to review the information at the end (*Generative Activities).

4. Quiz: An Introduction to the Orchestra
In my current role, I help guide 11 faculty teams from four different colleges in their creation of Open Education Resources (OER) that integrate diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.

I use H5P in the Open Voices, Just Choices faculty handbook (Pressbook link coming soon) I am co-creating with Karna Younger (OERFSJ Librarian/Project Coordinator) to model formative assessment and instruct faculty as they design and develop their own OER.

I also provide training and support for creating with H5P to the faculty teams.
